Former acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker has agreed to meet a second time with House lawmakers to clarify public testimony he gave earlier this month, the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee said.
Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., tweeted on Tuesday that Whitaker will return before the committee to answer more questions nearly three weeks after he traded barbs with Democrats and avoided answering several lines of questioning during a contentious public hearing.
“I want to thank Mr. Whitaker for volunteering to meet with us to clarify his @HouseJudiciary testimony,” Nadler tweeted on Tuesday, adding that he would seek to schedule the meeting in the coming days. A Justice Department spokeswoman said Whittaker would return “at some point over the next few weeks” and that the appearance would be behind closed doors.
The Journal, citing people familiar with the matter, reported on Monday that the House Judiciary Committee believes it has evidence that President Donald Trump asked Whitaker, when he was serving as acting attorney general, whether Manhattan U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman could regain control of his office’s investigation into Trump’s former lawyer, Michael Cohen, and the president’s real-estate business.
