U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will meet Thursday in New York with a top North Korean official as the two governments work toward a second summit between President Trump and Chairman Kim Jong Un, the State Department said Monday.
Pompeo will meet Kim Yong Chol, vice chairman of the North Korean Central Committee and the country’s former intelligence chief, the State Department said. The two officials will discuss pledges made following the June summit in Singapore between Messrs. Trump and Kim, “including achieving the final, fully verified denuclearization” of North Korea, according to the State Department.
Pompeo will be accompanied by Stephen Biegun, the special U.S. representative for North Korea who traveled to Seoul in late October.
The talks come as North Korea ramps up anti-U.S. rhetoric, with the country’s foreign ministry saying Friday that it may resume nuclear work absent sanctions relief from the U.S.
