Police detained the driver of a car that crashed into barriers outside the U.K. Houses of Parliament injuring pedestrians on Tuesday morning, yards away from the site of a terrorist attack in Westminster last year.
Television footage from the scene showed a silver Ford surrounded by armed police officers and fire engines outside the parliamentary buildings, the seat of the British government. Parliament is in summer recess.
The Metropolitan Police said in a tweet that “At 0737hrs today, a car was in collision with barriers outside the Houses of Parliament. The male driver of the car was detained by officers at the scene. A number of pedestrians have been injured. Officers remain at the scene. We will issue further info when we have it.”
Police closed surrounding roads in the area in the hour after the crash. A bus driver named Victor who was driving nearby told Sky News that he saw “a lot of smoke started coming out of the car” before he heard police sirens and police arrived at the scene.
