SYDNEY — Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has survived a leadership challenge after a rebellion within his own conservative ranks.
It comes a day after he backed away from attempts to mandate emissions-reduction targets in a bid to save his leadership.
Turnbull, 63, has struggled to pass key parts of his legislative agenda and maintain his authority since elections in 2016 left his coalition with a thin majority.
He was challenged by Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton, 47, winning the party ballot by 48 votes to 35.
