So much for one giant leap for womankind.
Two women astronauts were scheduled to perform the first-ever all-female spacewalk outside of the International Space Station on Friday, but NASA has aborted the milestone mission for want of “spacesuit availability.”
NASA astronauts Anne McClain and Christine Koch were set to conduct the seven-hour spacewalk together — symbolically scheduled during Women’s History Month — to install lithium-ion batteries for one pair of the station’s solar arrays. But when McClain and fellow NASA astronaut Nick Hague did the first spacewalk in the three-part series on March 22 (which also involved switching out aging batteries), McClain realized that her suit was too large to maneuver comfortably in, and that she needs a medium-size upper torso — aka “the shirt of the spacesuit” — to work more efficiently.
