Rashida Tlaib is set to become the first Muslim woman elected to Congress after winning a Democratic primary in Michigan on Tuesday.
The 42-year-old Tlaib narrowly defeated Brenda Jones, the president of Detroit’s city council, in a primary to succeed Rep. John Conyers. Tlaib is a former Michigan state legislator and currently faces no Republican challenger for the November election. The district is overwhelmingly Democratic.
Jones, meanwhile, will serve the final two months of Conyers’ term since she won a separate special election on Tuesday.
