There are Davids and Goliaths, women in their 30s, men in their 70s. Rich, and not so rich. Black, Asian, white. Mayors, senators and private citizens with no government experience. A veteran. Household names. Unknowns.
In all, nearly two dozen Democrats are running for president in 2020 or actively considering a bid. The latest to make it official: New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker.
The goal for many is simply to get on the stage in June for the first of a dozen planned primary debates in the 2020 election cycle. Others hope to win the mantle of front-runner status and ultimately, perhaps, a sense of inevitability.
But that is far down the road. The first voter decisions will come on Feb. 3, 2020, with the Iowa caucuses.
