Asian markets were mixed in early trading Thursday, following losses on Wall Street, as investors remained worried about the possibility of a global economic slowdown. Many indexes were off their session lows, though, and improved as the day’s trading went on.
Japan’s Nikkei NIK, -1.54% slid 1.5%, and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index HSI, -0.09% was last about flat after dropping early. The Shanghai Composite SHCOMP, -0.09% also recovered from early losses and was last about flat, while the smaller-cap Shenzhen Composite 399106, +0.62% rose 0.7%. South Korea’s Kospi SEU, -0.47% dropped 0.5%, while benchmark indexes in Taiwan Y9999, -0.18% , Singapore STI, +0.31% and Indonesia JAKIDX, -0.39% were mixed. Australia’s S&P/ASX XJO, +0.28% rose slightly.
Among individual stocks, Toyota 7203, -1.63% , Sony 6758, -2.01% and Japan Steel 5631, -4.41% fell in Tokyo trading. In Hong Kong, China Construction Bank 0939, -1.02% declined after posting its first quarterly drop in profit in almost four years. ACC Technologies 2018, -1.29% also dropped, while Sands China 1928, +1.04% gained. LG Electronics 066570, -1.35% and SK Hynix 000660, -0.95% fell in Korea.
